Background on QuEChERS
Method The original QuEChERS method is non-buffered, and was developed by M. Anastassiades, S.J. Lehotay, D. Stanjnbaher and F. J. Schenck in 2003 and published in the Journal of AOAC. Later, refinements were made to ensure efficient extraction of pH dependent compounds, to minimize degradation of susceptible compounds (e.g. base and acid labile pesticides) and to expand the spectrum of matrices covered.
Today there are two commonly used buffered methods:
A European standard (EN 15662) available from individual country members of the CEN (visit http://www.cen.eu/research) and a standard recognized by the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC 2007.01), used in the US and other countries.
Members have access to the method (visit http://www.aoac.org). There is continuing work being done to extend the scope of QuEChERS beyond fruits and vegetables. Katerina Mastrovska and Steve J. Lehotay have developed a QuEChERS method variation for the analysis of acrylamides in various food matrices. Another original QuEChERS developer, F.J. Schenck, has created a QuEChERS modification that helps protect planar and polar pesticides in the second phase of the method, leveraging a dual phase traditional SPE approach. The SampliQ QuEChERS family of products includes kits that help you take advantage of these latest developments.
